How much backing fabric for a crib quilt?
A crib quilt sized to the mattress lies flat without hanging over the sides, which is the safer choice for little ones.
1 3/4 yd of 42 in fabric (1 panel, vertical seams).
1 yd of 108 in wide-back (no seams).
How it's worked out
- Quilt size: 28 x 52 in, which is a quilt the size of a standard 28 x 52 in crib mattress, with no drop.
- Backing size = (28 + 8) x (52 + 8) = 36 x 60 in, which leaves 4 in on every side for the longarm or for basting.
- Vertical seams: 1 panels x 60 in = 60 in = 1 3/4 yd.
- Horizontal seams: 2 panels x 36 in = 72 in = 2 yd.
- Use the option that needs less: vertical, 1 3/4 yd. Usable width is taken as 42 in (106 in for wide-back).
