How much backing fabric for a twin quilt?
Twin beds are narrow but long, so a twin quilt with a generous drop ends up longer than most people expect.
5 7/8 yd of 42 in fabric (2 panels, vertical seam).
2 yd of 108 in wide-back (no seams).
How it's worked out
- Quilt size: 63 x 97 in, which is a twin mattress (39 x 75 in) with a 12 in drop on both sides and the foot and a 10 in pillow tuck.
- Backing size = (63 + 8) x (97 + 8) = 71 x 105 in, which leaves 4 in on every side for the longarm or for basting.
- Vertical seams: 2 panels x 105 in = 210 in = 5 7/8 yd.
- Horizontal seams: 3 panels x 71 in = 213 in = 6 yd.
- Use the option that needs less: vertical, 5 7/8 yd. Usable width is taken as 42 in (106 in for wide-back).
