How much binding for a king quilt?
King quilts are wide enough that even 42 in quilting cotton needs three panels for the backing in most layouts.
10 strips, 414 in of binding.
3/4 yd at 2 1/2 in wide · 5/8 yd at 2 1/4 in wide.
How it's worked out
- Quilt size: 100 x 102 in, which is a king mattress (76 x 80 in) with a 12 in drop on both sides and the foot and a 10 in pillow tuck.
- Binding length = 2 x (100 + 102) + 10 in for joins and corners = 414 in.
- Strips = 414 ÷ 42 in usable width = 9.86, rounded up to 10.
- Fabric = 10 x 2 1/2 in = 25 in, rounded up to the next 1/8 yd = 3/4 yd (or 10 x 2 1/4 in = 22 1/2 in = 5/8 yd).
