How much binding for a throw quilt?
Throws are the most common first quilt. At 50 x 65 in they are big enough for the sofa and quick to finish.
6 strips, 240 in of binding.
1/2 yd at 2 1/2 in wide · 3/8 yd at 2 1/4 in wide.
How it's worked out
- Quilt size: 50 x 65 in, which is a typical 50 x 65 in throw (sizes vary by pattern).
- Binding length = 2 x (50 + 65) + 10 in for joins and corners = 240 in.
- Strips = 240 ÷ 42 in usable width = 5.71, rounded up to 6.
- Fabric = 6 x 2 1/2 in = 15 in, rounded up to the next 1/8 yd = 1/2 yd (or 6 x 2 1/4 in = 13 1/2 in = 3/8 yd).
